Parent claimed me as dependent. Does this affect my aid?

Postby collegeguy1987 » Wed Mar 20, 2013 1:58 pm

My mom claimed me as a dependent through all of my years in college. I've realized that she probably should not have done this seeing as I did not live at home during these years nor did she pay for my expenses.

I'm wondering if this affected the amount of financial aid I received which in turn affected the amount of student loans I had to take out.

Secondly, is there anything that can be done about this now? After the fact?

I appreciate any help on the matter :D

For financial aid purposes, a student is considered a dependent unless one of the following applies:

You are 24 years of age or older
You are in a graduate program
You are married
You are a parent
You have dependents
Both your parents are deceased or were a ward of dependent of the court
You are serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training
You're a Veteran
You were a foster child
You are an emancipated child as determined by a court judge
You are homeless or at risk of homelessness

If none of these applied to you while you were in school, even if you essentially supported yourself, you should have filed as dependent.

If you did qualify as an independent student at the time, you would have been eligible for more Stafford loans. There is no way to update this after the fact, unfortunately.
