Peace Corps Loan Deferment

Postby alexheath1988 » Wed Feb 20, 2013 9:17 pm

Hello,

I have a question about loan deferment through the Peace Corps. On the Great Lakes website, who is my student loan provider, they have posted the following:

Full-time volunteer
(Peace Corps or ACTION program)
Note: Only available to those with their first loan disbursed before July 1, 1993.
3 year limit Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford and SLS loans

Now, my loans were definitely not disbursed before 1993. However, I know of other students who have had their federal loans deferred by entering into the Peace Corps. Has anyone else had this same problem? Any information would be appreciated.

According to the Department of Education, federal student loans can be deferred while in the peace corps. To do so, you will need to request an economic hardship deferment through Great Lakes. Not sure why their website refers to only loans before '93.
