Parent Loans - Unmarried Parents

Postby cmorris73 » Wed Feb 20, 2013 12:00 pm

My son is preparing his FAFSA now. His father and I were never married - we shared custody, but his father claims the deduction by agreement. My son is using his father's financial information on the FAFSA. Since I make a lot more money than his father, I am not going to be included on the FAFSA. Will I still be able to take out Parent Student Loans to help my son with college if necessary?

Yes, either parent can apply for PLUS Loans for their child, though if you both decide to do so, the total taken out must not exceed the student's Cost of Attendance.
