Incentives

Postby pcgabe » Wed Oct 28, 2009 11:52 am

I saw a list of consolidation incentives at finaid.org (eg, reduced interest rate for direct debit). That sent me to gradloans.com, but I could not find any incentive information, and the button I clicked (I thought) to start the consolidation process only led to an e-mail being sent to me about a repayment plan guide that would cost me $200. I don't need a guide, I know exactly what I want; I'm just trying to find it.

So I went to the gradloans.com Contact Us page, and the line "If your question was not answered above, please click here to contact us." if you click there only adds another line that says "Or complete the following form:" There's no form. But there was a link to this forum.

So here are my question:
1) Does the Student Loan Network actually do consolidation loans?
2) Does the Student Loan Network have incentives that reduce the interest rate?

The Student Loan Network does not actually do loan consolidation. We just connect you with the people who do loan consolidations.

If you are looking to consolidate federal loans you will need to consolidate through the Department of Education's Direct Loan Center. They can be reached at 800.848.0979 or online at https://www.dl.ed.gov/borrower/BorrowerWelcomePage.jsp.

If you are looking to consolidate private loans you can try Wells Fargo at 800.658.3567.

Unfortunately there usually are not too many interest rate reductions with student loan consolidation. Consolidation simply extends your loan term so that you have a lower monthly payment. The new interest rate is a weighted average of all of your previous interest rates.
