My son is a Freshman at UMass Amherst, he recieved a subsidized Stafford loan for his first semester in the amount of $1,733.00.
He recieved a scholarship in January for the Spring '13 semester, great news! However, Umass removed the subsidized (need based)
Stafford loan payment of $1,733.00 that was applied to the Spring '13 semester due to the reduced financial need (scholarship amount).

My question is: Can we request a change to /or apply for an unsubsidized (non need based) Stafford loan in mid term to reapply the
$1,733.00 payment to the Spring '13 semester?

I apprieciate any assistance anyone would consider.

Yes, you can request additional aid (including unsub. stafford loans) through UMass' financial aid office.

Eligibility for more aid depends on how much has already been used, but your financial aid office will be able to provide you with your options.
