Stafford Loans For Graduates and Forgiveness

Postby Karen H » Thu Jul 02, 2009 9:46 am

I have been teaching in the Head Start program in Grand Rapids Michigan for 18 years. Last year, I had to go back to school due to changes in requirements. I paid out of pocket for the first 5 classes in my master's program. I applied this year for FAFSA because I was trying to get a scholarship. I got a small scholarship and a Stafford loan. I have not signed for the Stafford yet because I have some questions.
1. What can i use my Stafford loan for?

2. I have heard that working with impovrished students qualifies a person for loan forgiveness, Is this true? Does Head Start qualify dor this? Do my previous 18 years of service count?

Help!

Hi Karen, I am not sure if teaching in Head Start qualifies, but I would think it would. Call the US dept of Ed at 800-433-3243 to find out. Also, a Stafford loan is used for tuition or "eligible school expenses" usually for a masters program the school will certify the loan for you and give you a refund check mid semester for anything remaining after tuition is paid. People then use this amount for whatever they need it for.
