IBR, Loan Forgiveness and Federal Loan Consolidation

Postby lombardi242 » Sat Oct 31, 2009 2:36 pm

I work for a state government. I have two law school loans out. I think they are stafford loands. One is a subsidized consolidated loan, one is unsubsidized consolidated loan.

Assuming they are both Stafford but they are through AES/Key Bank, not federal direct loans.

Can I consolidate these already consolidated loans into a federal direct consolidation loan(s) in order to take advantage of the CCRAA? (IBR program and student loan forgiveness after 10 years)?

Thanks

Yes you can. I would recommend consolidating as soon as you can. The DOE's website is www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov

The ten years (120 payments) begin once you make your first payment with the DOE. Any payments you've made thus far with your current servicer will not be applied toward that loan forgiveness program.
