Questions about repaying student loan

Postby mdokitty » Mon Feb 01, 2010 1:37 pm

To Whom It May Concern
I have questions about repaying student loan. My situation is quite rare, but my education road is not an easy road. I graduated with BS degree in biology and went to Dental School. But unfortunately, I was diagnosed with Schizophrenia, so I took a time off and came back. Now I am in my third year of dental school, However, with so much responsibilities, and so much stress together with my disease, I decided I should quit dental school and maybe go for dental hygiene. I am now owe $250000 in student loan. I really dont know how can I pay for it? I wonder if I can have a forebearance, loan discharge, forgiveness. Also, if I get accepted in dental hygiene program can I still borrow some money from stafford loan, so I can try to finish a program, work and pay back the loan. Thank you.

You best bet would definitely be to apply for income based repayment. This repayment plan can help borrowers keep their loan payments affordable with payment caps based on their income and family size. If your income is zero you will have a payment of zero. After 25 years of payments your federal loans will be forgiven. Here is a link to more information on the plan http://www.studentloannetwork.com/repayment/income-based-repayment.php
