How to cover past due tuition balances?

Postby buttonbot » Tue Mar 02, 2010 2:42 pm

I have an outstanding balance on my school bill from last January 26. I tried to get this taken care of through Sallie Mae in the fall, but the funds failed to go through due to confusion between my school and Sallie Mae. I only learned that the loans had failed to happen last week. Now, both sides are saying that that they can't help me because it has been more than 12 months.
Everything that I am seeing says most banks and lending companies won't go back farther than 12 months. Do I have any options for getting this taken care of?

I know that some lenders give out loans for past due tuition, but I am not sure how far they go back. Here is a list of lenders to try: http://www.privatestudentloans.com/compare

If a student loan does not work out you might want to look into taking out a personal loan.

Are you still in school now, or have you graduated?

Also, roughly how much is the remaining balance?

I am still in school, for another year after this one, and the balance is just under $2,000

If you are still in school and paying that expense out of pocket isn't possible, you should consider taking out a private student loan to cover the cost. As long as you have good credit (or have a co-signer with good credit) the approval process takes a few weeks.

This page is really useful for comparing some of the more popular lenders, and what features and benefits each have: http://www.privatestudentloans.com/compare
