Financial aid dilemma. Need some help please!

Postby carlyr02 » Mon Oct 21, 2013 5:25 pm

Hello I am new here and have a dilemma with the school I currently attend. I'm studying at a vocational school and graduating from the Cosmetology program in December. I have been in the program for a year and a half and have used Pell Grants and loans to cover the program. I have been looking into starting a Medical Office program once I am finished, at the same school so that I have another career option. The main reason why I even decided on going back for something else after Cosmetology is due to health problems I have had over the past 6 months. My doctor agreed that an office job would be more suitable and cause less wear and tear on my body. I would still like to do hair part time so my license will not be wasted. I contacted the lady who handles the financial aid and she emailed me back stating that they encourage me to obtain experience in my current field and pay back all loans before beginning another program. She also claimed that with my financial aid history the government would likely mark my account to be watched as one who is jumping from program to program to obtain loans. Before this program I took a few courses and the first school was paid in full and the 2nd school I only took out enough to cover the three courses I took, and the amount wasn't very much. With Cosmetology I did take out additional loans because it is a full time program and with being a parent I haven't been able to work full time while in the program. The part that confuses me is that plenty of people go back to school after finishing a program. My school even offers some college credits so that people in my program can go into a business program after they graduate if they choose to. But she is basically saying I will be turned down and I don't understand the reasoning. I am hoping someone here can explain why I wouldn't be able to get anymore help to start another program as I have never heard of that happening unless you are in default on a loan or something of the sort. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this situation as I am very confused! Thank you for taking the time to read this.

There is a limit to the amount of money that you can borrow for school. I suggest you go to www.studentaid.ed.gov to get more information about the maximum amout that you can borrow for your education. If you need to look into private education funding go to www.edvisors.com to get more information.

I am no where near reaching my financial aid limit. My school just frowns upon people changing their career path so I believe they are trying to discourage me. Can they legally deny me if the government okays my financial aid?

No legally they should not be able to force you to stay on one path. They may have policies in place that discourage what you are trying to do, but if you explain your situation to them, they may allow you to change.
